Course Overview

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this course is to assist deck officer holding class III, CoC but with no experience of individual sea watch. The course will give confidence and practice in the understanding and implementation of the regulations It covers the application of the rules in open sea and inland water such as narrow channel, river passage and traffic separation scheme and heavy weather, restricted visibility. It also covers the need to maintain a continuing plot of ship targets which may pose a potential threat of collision. After the course, the student will be able to:
  • Describe all COLREGs responsibilities of navigation watch keeper.
  • Describe the different COLREGs Rules Explain the application of rules in various exercises
  • Describe lighting shapes and Types of vessels
  • Apply rules correctly in practical exercises and CBT assessment

Content

  • Maneuvering;
  • Describe information available on board ship with particular reference to turning circle and stopping distance
  • Explain how they are affected by shallow water and the draught and trim of the ship.
  • Describe procedure of the traffic regulation and ship action to take
  • Describe the maneuvers required to minimize risk of collision at open sea and inland water such as narrow channel, river passage and traffic separation scheme and heavy weather, restricted visibility as well.
  • Knowledge of Regulations;
  • Explain the terms “proper look-out”, “full appraisal", “safe speed” and “positive action in ample time”
  • Describe the requirements set out in the appropriate regulations and recommendations, see R1, Section A-VIII/1 and VIII/2 of the STCW Code, COLREG 72
  • Effective Bridge Team Work:
  • Describe the composition and the responsibilities of all Bridge team members.
  • Describe when a ‘Watch’ responsibility starts and finishes.
  • Describe the importance of Safe Working Practice and adherence to the rules.
